The quest to gain Kildangan School’s
first Active Schools Flag began is September 2013. An Active School
committee, including pupils and staff, was formed to overlook the efforts to
gain our first flag.
We set up “ Play Teams” with 5th & 6th Class, who helped the Junior & Senior Infants to be active at break times. They organised the equipment needed for the play stations and ran the stations for the duration of the lunch break. “ Play teams” to help 1st & 2nd Class started in the Spring. The Parents Association were very supportive of our efforts to get our flag . They provided funds to buy equipment, including 2 new basketball backboards and hoops, a table tennis table , bats & balls, bases and posts for tennis & volleyball nets, parachute & parachute games equipment, 4 ring sets, a soccer table games & air hockey game, 2 bowling sets, 10 space hoppers, a swingball game, gym mats & marbles . We created a new noticeboard in the main reception area, where we could see the displays of all activities the children had completed. Activities included tennis, skipping, Santa Dash, Dance fitness, kiddies pilates. We also had photos of children who received medals in recent Community Games Swimming competition. On the activity front, we designated Thursdays as “Active Thursdays” whereby every class has an activity . Junior & Senior Infants had 12 weeks of Kiddies Pilates. 1st Class to 6th Class have 4 Dance-fitness classes. For the month of March 1st & 2nd Class had basketball coaching while 3rd to 6th class enjoyed “ tag rugby” coaching lessons. After Easter all classes tried out Gymnastics with coaches from Athy Gymnastics Club. "Busy Breaks” were also incorporated into the classroom, which allowed the children to get up and active in the classroom for 10-15 minutes of fun activities such as singing and dancing. We ran a successful Active School Week in May 2014. The week was packed with activities for everyone. Local organisations such as the GAA and the newly formed Scout Troup also participated, along with parents. In the new school year - September 2014, we continued our Active Campaign. On the 1st October, 2014 our application was assessed. All our efforts were observed, inspected and analyzed and the feedback was very positive. We received word later that month that our school has achieved all the standards required to be awarded the Active School Flag. We are delighted with this and acknowledge all the work by students, teachers and parents to achieve this goal. Our vision of creating an active culture and instilling an active attitude in everyone in Kildangan School continues. |
